Ask to move out of California with a conservatee
If you’re a conservator for someone who can't fully care for themselves (called the conservatee) and want to move out of California, you must get the court’s permission first.
How to ask to move out of state

Fill out court forms
You’ll need to fill out these forms:

Petition to Fix Residence Outside the State of California (form GC-085)

Use this to ask the court for permission to move the conservatee to another state.

If the conservatee is able to understand, they can sign the consent section on page 2.

Notice of Hearing – Guardianship or Conservatorship (form GC-020)

Fill out the top section (caption), item 1, and page 2 (names and addresses of relatives who need to be served by mail).

When you file this form, the clerk will write in the court date.

Order Fixing Residence Outside the State of California (form GC-090)

This is the proposed order the judge will sign if they approve your request.

Make copies
Make at least 3 copies of each completed form:

1 copy for you
-
1 copy for the conservatee's family

1 copy to serve any other required people
The court keeps the original.

File the forms
Take the completed forms and copies to the probate clerk at the courthouse listed on your forms.

Give the clerk the originals and copies

The clerk will:

Stamp the copies

Give you a court date

Keep the original Order (form GC-090) for the judge or give it back to you to bring to the hearing

📌 The judge will decide at the hearing if you can move the conservatee to another state.
